FALL CAMPAIGN FOR SURMANG
SAKYONG DEDICATES OCT. 7 MARATHON TO SHEDRA
"I encourage the entire Shambhala community to join me in supporting the fall fund raising campaign for the Konchok Foundation, and our effort to build a shedra (school) at Dutsi Til in the Surmang region of Tibet. I will again run the Chicago Marathon, on October 7th, to raise awareness of this important project. I invite everyone to use this opportunity to make a contribution in support of the education and training of the younger generation at Surmang. With your support, we will close in the school buildings this season."

Ruins of the traditional residence of the Trungpas, the Surmang kargenma, are visible further up the mountain.
Major support drive. The October 7 marathon campaign will provide the main financial support for Surmang this year. Supporters are asked to consider providing $1 or $5 or $10 per mile for the Sakyong’s 26 mile race. The necessary construction materials to close in the building, especially additional doors and windows, must be obtained as soon as possible—and money is needed to purchase them. Konchok Foundation will be forwarding donations to Tibet as soon as we receive them.
“Thank you, everyone who is helping with the rebuilding of Surmang Dutsi Til, this is very good. Every person who is helping in any way to continue the dharma teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, in Tibet and in the West, this is very important, for the benefit of all beings.” --The Surmang Khenpo, who is directing the shedra construction

The shedra (school) will provide both dharma and secular education to youths and adults, women and men. Most people in the Surmang valley have had no education and there is a very high rate of illiteracy.
The building complex includes a main shrine room, classrooms, residences for Trungpa Rinpoche and other teachers, housing for approximately 75 students, a kitchen, bathrooms, and a courtyard. It is the largest project in the rebuilding of Surmang Dutsi Til, the home monastery of the Trungpa Rinpoche lineage in eastern Tibet.

Trungpa XII Rinpoche is now 18 years old and is presently studying at Surmang Namgyaltse, another of the monasteries in the Surmang group. A portion of the funds raised by Konchok Foundation goes toward covering the living expenses of Trungpa Rinpoche. Re-establishing a seat for the Trungpa lineage at Surmang is one of the key goals of the shedra effort.
Wayen. Konchok Foundation board members Bob and Lindy King and David Bolduc traveled to Wayen in the Golok area of Tibet in August with Lama Chonam. Planning meetings were held about a shedra, and also about much-needed housing, at Wayen, a location which is closely connected to Mipham Rinpoche and to the Gesar teachings.
